A classic novel of romantic fiction and political analysis.

A Poor Wise Man Mary Roberts Rinehart 9781490430614 Books

I have been reading a lot of Mary Roberts Rinehart. I knew her as primarily a mystery writer. I find her other novels - including this one - give me an insight into the early part of the 20th century I had not previously had. The pre - WW-I political climate of the country, the role of industry, the lifestyles of the various classes, etc. are so well-described in her novels. Some of the racial/ethnic stereotypes are a bit disturbing, but probably in line with the times, unfortunately. I found understanding some of the attitudes of that period, gave me insight into how some events of current times evolved.

A Poor Wise Man Mary Roberts Rinehart 9781490430614 Books Reviews

She always gets high marks from me. I've read almost all of her books. This was a new one for me. She always wrote good mysteries and I love a good mystery.
The war with the Huns might be over but the war with the Commies is just heating up. Young William Wallace Cameron decides to protect the country he loves from these "foreigners" by organizing a secret vigilante committee modeled upon... the Ku Klux Klan. o_O Rich girl Lily Cardew could have been an interesting character as a pre-Flapper caught between the old timey expectations of a woman's place and the taste of freedom and responsibility she had during World War I working in a Red Cross camp. Unfortunately Lily just ends up a cold fish who is easily duped by a socialist gigolo. The Haves and the Have Nots battle it out with author Rinehart clearly on the side of the Haves.
I enjoyed this book - really liked the characters and the story line.
It wasn't at all what I expected and do recommend it!
My interest waned a little and so I still have not read it all the way through
This is a subject that has always interested me, I love to read books about labor and it's fight against owners. In this story it clearly shows how socialism infiltrated the ranks of labor and how the working man was wrongly put to blame for the actions of an evil few.
I loved this book! She writes really well about war and relationships- much better than her mysteries. The amazing interlude is also good
I down loaded this book because I had read another (modern day) book that made reference to Mary Rinehart's Mystery writing. This book is not a Mystery novel. As I titled this review, this novel is a Romance with some impressive political, social, and psychological observation spread throughout the story's plot. Set in 1919 in an unnamed "City" (a kind of "Every City" as I read the novel) the readers follow the lives of William Wallace Cameron (pay attention to that full name!) and Lilly Cardew as they wend their way towards each other through mutual misunderstandings and misconceptions--to their inevitable "happy ending."

This book held my attention, despite being a Romance, which says a good deal about its merits--as I generally regard Romances as the equivalent of mental chewing-gum. For those who like the Romance genre, this is an excellent one. For those, like myself, who would generally prefer reading he Yellow Pages to reading a Romance novel, this book offers a glimpse into the political, social and psychological views of early 20th Century America.
