Volume II of the "Reconstruction Trilogy" set of historically accurate novels designed to tell the post Civil War story from the Southern side. This book was used as the script for the highly successful film Birth of a Nation by DW Griffiths, which was endorsed by President Woodrow Wilson. Written in the colorful style of the time, this book starts with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, (described in the book as the "South's friend") and follows the story of Ben Cameron, a young Confederate officer who becomes leader of the Ku Klux Klan and "overturns the Reconstruction regime." The book also focuses on the struggle in the Union circles between Lincoln, who argues for "colonization" as "the physical difference between the races precludes their harmonious coexistence" and those who seek integration. The book highlights the madness of slavery, the impossibility of segregation and that physical racial geographical separation is the only answer to the race problem.

Although 40 years in Kansas has made me a Midwesterner, I was born in North Carolina so anything about the South interests me. I never knew that my great great grandparents had owned slaves until the last fifteen years or so as a cousin shared his work on our family tree. It came as something of a shock. I began to wonder about the life of those ancestors before, during, and after the Civil War. During high school, the Reconstruction Era was quickly glossed over. As a teenager with an active life, I probably was not interested into delving further as integration of schools started occurring in my home town.
I was hooked on Thomas Dixon after reading the Leopard's Spots. .Reading books by Thomas Dixon has brought me to a better understanding of race relations in the South. Warning, there are some comments that are very inflammatory about black people. I can understand if a black person reads books by Thomas Dixon and is angered. When reading, please understand this was the feeling of the people after the war who had lost everything and were being governed by blacks who had been their slaves and were uneducated. I am not excusing how the people felt only trying to walk in their shoes for the moment. Even after 150 years, the relationship between blacks and whites in the South is uneasy and tentative. Perhaps it always will be.
The book weaves a love story into the story of reconstruction and that does make it more interesting to read than out of a history book. Is everything that happened in the book true or a rendition of the truth? I have no idea.
I do encourage anyone interested in that era of our history to read Dixon's books. Some of his fictitious characters can be traced back to real historical figures which adds interest. In this book, the character, Stoneman is actually based on Thaddeous Stevens.
I found this book to be an interesting read. This book actually walked me through the birth of the Klu Klux Klan. I don't quite understand its' "title", but it gave me a greater understanding of how a group of people felt threaten over losing "a way of life" that they believed to be sanctioned by God himself. The book demonstrated the ignorance of people from different stations in life that felt the possibility of power and control slipping away from their grasp.
It's odd to say I like this book. It's not the best written book, but it is interesting as a piece of history. The Clansman was the "inspiration" for "Birth of a Nation." It really draws the reader in. I think it gains momentum, until by the final sections, when the violence enters, one is inclined to be sympathetic to the characters, even the one who becomes the Grand Dragon of the KKK. I can see how the book was like balm to people in the south--and I am from the south--trying to make sense of the Civil War and its aftermath. Fascinating book.
The value of this novel is not literary, and not even sociological, but rather entirely of historical interest, because the Rev. Thomas Dixon's racism was not stigmatized a century ago in the United States. Indeed the novel was enormously popular, and hence worth pondering for that reason alone, in his advocacy of the legitimacy of the so-called First Klan.
The elements of the hero's journey are present in the tale of the wounded warrior returning home not as a victor but as one who is dispossessed. Knowing the conditions under which the Ku Klux Klan emerged gives the reader context of the story and the author provides these. The historical accuracy is debatable; depending on which historian one asks, yet the KKK did not emerge ex-nihilo. That the hero's father expresses misgivings about the Klan serves as an indication that going the way of the night riders was to open a Pandora's Box; an act of which many people were reluctant to perform.
'The Clansman' by Thomas Dixon is not an easy read nor is it for everyone. However, if you are interested in seeing a view of the south from the perspective of someone looking at it in the early years of the 20th century here is an opportunity to do so. Most people have come to appreciate the diversity between races of people and have had glimpses of the struggle that brought about the changes in civil rights during the 1960's and 1970's through history books and films but we have come to see it looking back from a distance down the path rather than looking ahead to an uncertain future. 'The Clansman' will give the reader a taste for the attitudes that brought about the Ku Klux Klan and help provide an insight into thinking of the people that were experiencing a sea change to what they perceived as the norm and how they were fighting to put the toothpaste back into the tube. If you are a fan of history and enjoy looking at situations from different points of view, you will enjoy 'The Clansman' even though it is difficult to come to grips with the philosophy of the author.
it is very densely written and it seems with the level of detail is was created in a way that it could be a play it a movie. The Birth of a Nation was based off of this book. There are differences but the idea the same. Post Civil war, black people have taken over the South and it is chaos. They are presented as barbaric and dimwitted, and the book is obviously meant to be a propaganda piece. The Northerners who go South are charmed by the Southerners and start to see how they have been wronged. It is historical fiction created to romanticize what many white Southerners believed was the correct order of society and how losing the civil war upended it. If this is how many white Southerners still see their place in this era, it explains why we are where we are today as a country.
